Calw, Germany

We arrived in Stuttgart today and then drove to the beautiful town in the Black Forest called Calw, where we will be staying for the next four days...

"Between Bremen and Naples, between Vienna and Singapore, I have had the opportunity to see many charming towns; towns beside the sea and high up on mountain sides..., but the most beautiful town of all is Calw on the Nagold, a small, traditional Swabian town in the Black Forest."

Writing in praise of his birthplace, Hermann Hesse expressed not only his love for the town and countryside associated with his childhood memories, but also his intimate knowledge of one of the most noteworthy places to visit along the eastem fringe of the Black Forest. Set deep in the narrow, red sandstone Nagold valley and encircled by the dark fir trees of the Black Forest, Calw is a place of outstanding scenic and architectural beauty, perceptible to the visitor at every twist and turn in its streets and alleys, squares and bridges.
