On the western shores of Canada, lies the town of Tofino. A place of dreams, starry nights, endless waves and West Coast culture. Located on the oh-so-majestic Vancouver Island, this oasis is just about as close to paradise as one could possibly get.
We flew out of YVR's South Terminal on Friday after work and made it to Chesterman Beach to watch the sunset a few hours later. The only potential downside to this mode of transportation is not having a car to explore the area. If you're up for the challenge of using your legs, pedalling and hitching a few rides then it's not a big deal at all.
Tofino plays host to over a million visitors each year. September proved to be a lovely time to catch some waves, get in a few long runs, tear around on cruiser bikes and check out the local food scene (without having to make reservations).
We rented boards and full-body wet suits from Live To Surf and walked (think hauled) them over to the beach. This is a great idea in theory but if you aren't used to the weight and size of a surfboard then I suggest finding another way to get from one point to another.
Part of the adventure of calling the West Coast home comes from exploring its mountains, trails, beaches and forests. Vancouver has truly proven to be a wonderful launching pad to reach this area of the world.
Here are a few images that best represent Tofino from around the web with a few of my own gems sprinkled in for good measure.
"Still round the corner there may waitA new road or a secret gate
And though I oft have passed them by
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun."
— J.R.R. Tolkien
